Showing Patriotism as a Senior

The 1828 Webster's Dictionary defines patriotism as the love of one's country and a passion which aims to serve it. The word is further explained by a statement that patriotism is the characteristic of a good citizen and that this trait can propel individuals into action.

Patriotism isn't limited to a specific season or holiday. While displaying flags, wearing themed clothing and attending events can help seniors celebrate their nation during times such as 4th of July, Memorial Day or Veteran's Day, there are many methods that they can use to show off their feelings of patriotism and to make a difference in their community year round.

Supporting Our Troops

One of the ways seniors can put their patriotism into action is by paying tribute to the members of our military who guard our country and freedoms. Joining in troop tributes lets seniors stand with others around the Denver area in support of these brave men and women.

Here in Park Regency Thornton, residents can speak with staff about creating their own events such as parades or dinners honoring the veterans among their neighbors.
Those with sewing experience can make quilts for injured service members in VA hospitals, and individuals who love baking can mix up batches of sweet treats in the country kitchen for soldiers abroad.

Seniors can also share their gratitude with troops who are stationed overseas by helping to fill care packages, writing letters and taking part in thank you videos.

Voting and Volunteering

As a democratic republic, America is dependent upon its citizens participation during elections in order to select leaders, preserve freedom and values and establish new laws. One of the most important ways that seniors can serve their country is by staying informed on key issues and regularly voting during local and national elections.

Seniors who are passionate about government and law can consider volunteering their time to help officials or parties that have earned their respect and share their beliefs. Many political campaigns rely on volunteers to help reach potential voters by making phone calls, preparing mail or going door-to-door.

Inspiring the Next Generation

One of the most important ways a patriotic citizen can serve their country is to teach the value of freedom to their families and younger members of their community. Seniors can help ensure the blessings of liberty continue to exist in the years to come by helping the next generation of citizens to understand and protect it.

A great way to introduce patriotism to children is to share with them the fascinating life stories of men and women who have shaped our country. Learning about the rich history of our nation can help inspire children to want to take action for themselves and find their own ways to make a difference.
